PINK-STONE, LAKE-MOON
April 16th, 2022

This multimedia installation features wheel thrown ceramic sculpture, handmade quilted paper, and woodworking. I designed the symbols on the sculptures. They represent stones, lakes, moons, songs, and futures. The exhibition is titled PINK-STONE, LAKE-MOON because stones, lakes, and the moon are circular objects, but we interact with each in a different way. Stones may sit in the palm of your hand, or you may look down at them as they rest on the ground. Lakes beckon beings to sit at their edge, or to go for a swim. The moon asks us to look to the sky, not to reach out to touch, but simply to look. Pink symbolises love and intimacy.

Celebrating seasonal and lunar holidays outdoors has connected humans with the land they inhabit as long as time. I grew up marking the seasons according to Roman Catholic holidays. In preparation for this project I researched the history, ritual, and sacred spaces of Celtic Pagans. I began to see the holidays I grew up with as Pagan holidays appropriated by the Catholic Church long ago to silence earth centered spiritual practices. While I identify more with my ancient Celtic Pagan ancestors, I remain fascinated by Catholic ideals of reverence and sacred objects.

PINK-STONE, LAKE-MOON calls visitors to experience moments of intimacy with nature as a way to  celebrate the Pink Moon. Tonight the full moon will be closer to us than usual, and it coincides with the blooming of spring flowers. The Pink Moon is a holiday to love our rocks, lakes, and the moon.
