Big Kitty's Reverie Commissary

Big Kitty is an intelligent, gigantic feline who owns a rental shop located between the dream and waking worlds. Human customers frequent her shop, which is stocked with local feline-made products as well as objects stolen from humans. Big Kitty uses her magic paw to cast a spell over each object in the shop that allows them to travel between the dream world and the waking world. The ceramic objects are drab raw clay on one side, and glisten with colorful glazes on the other, as if they’re between two worlds. Big Kitty’s shelves are lined with personal massagers, curious powders, and photos she’s taken of explicit sexual acts. The objects beg to be caressed as they are rich in unique textures of fuzz, reflective glazes, and roughness. However, something darker lurks beneath this wonderland of pleasure. Big Kitty is a killer, and seller of arms. Dead rodents, locks and keys, and sharp knives are scattered amongst the sensual objects of pleasure. The dream world of Big Kitty’s queer/trans femme clientele is host to something terrifying and disturbing; objects of protection are a necessity. I built Big Kitty’s character based on my own experiences of hyper-vigilance and overwhelming fear following traumatic events. Big Kitty is a deeply flawed guardian angel for her client’s subconscious. She’s hyper-vigilant of danger, constantly ready to pounce. She provides countless different tools for clients to achieve bliss, however bliss remains far from reach so long as clients need her aggressive protection. Big Kitty’s obsessive extermination of danger prevents her from living fully in the world. Initially I thought I could make Big Kitty’s world a sort of utopia, but nearing the end I’m realizing that her character and the objects she’s selling represent symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder many queer/trans people and femmes experience following sexual violence. With Big Kitty world, I create an imaginative healing narrative and following the journey of survivors.
